Setting The Example
When you are a new Instructor,it is easy to want all the students to like you. What I found out is that it is best to be respected. If you want the respect you must give it.If you want the students to be on time you must be on time. What ever it is that you want out of your class, you must look to yourself because the students are definitely looking at you and studying you.
I felt that way on my first day, I wanted the entire class to like me, so that I would be more comfortable being in there. It is better to be respected than to be liked. By showing them this fundamental behavior quality, they can apply respect in their lives personal and professional.
Hi Angel,
The key is to concentrate on being fair and consistent with all your students and enjoy those students that really want to learn. We can't let those students that don't like us or don't care to drag us down to their level.

No matter how hard you try to be the most reasonable, easy to get along with, friendliest, and knowledgeable instructor, there will always be students who just don't like you. You are not there to be liked!
From the first day you go into your classroom you should be a role model for your students not their friend. Being a good role model means being professional at all times. Show them respect and they will respect you.
Hi Shaquandway,
You are right about the need to work on earning the respect of students rather than wanting all of the students to like you. With respect will come a level of professional satisfaction that makes teaching worth it all. Keep up the good work.
