Developing Confidence

I am a first time instructor. I am pretty confident with everything that I do, but find myself doubting my ability to educate students. I know once I figure it out I'll be fine, but finding the confidence is turning out to be harder then I ever had thought. How do some of you find the confidence to teach others? It's their careers on the line.

I have been teaching since 2001. I still lack confidence about information I'm delivering. I find that if I make a brief outline and leave my book alone during class things go much easier. I also pretend I'm a student before I lecture and ask myself "what would a student ask about the area I'm covering"? Then I prepare answers. I found this builds my confidence because I'm ready for anything(they may never ask). Also, by not using the book you have less of a chance of double guessing yourself. I even write down the page numbers (if students ask were are you) so I have all my information in front of me. I write notes with topics I'm covering. By doing these things I can use more humor and I don't lose my place(sometimes I still do). I find students respect and understand better if you do make a mistake. Even if you lack confidence you have to be a actor/actress and pretend (don't over do). What you will find is that confidence becomes real and part of you.
