Ways to motivate students

I'm passionate about teaching and motivating students to learn appropriately. As a new instructor, I want to ensure students enhance their knowledge base, and apply what they have learned in the real world. Can you provide specfic techniques to help motivate students in clinical/classroom?

Hello Shirley,

My students are motivated when they actually see their former classmates or former graduates of their school on the job working. When my students are in the medical facilities doing their clinical rotations, the students sometimes get to see the school former students hired and actually working in their career. The former student will talk to the students about their role and routine of their job and how well they like their job. This motivate the students and give them positive hope about their future.

Hi Richard,
So true and so important. They need to have a model against which they can measure themselves in relation to being a professional. This is a great service instructors can give to their students and the field of culinary arts.

In the culinary field we, as chefs are what they want to become. I have told my students many times that they need to arm themselves with their shield which is professionalism. Since they look up to us we are a tool to their having the ability to be motivated by a proper example of what will be expected of them in the workplace.

Look for opportunities for your class to practice their skills by volunteering in the community :)

I use field trips as well. Students are always eager to see what they are learning applied in a real world setting.
Graduates are always excited to talk about their careers and how they got there. Good advice.

Hi Anna,
I agree with the value of field trips. They really help the students to put together what they have been studying and see the world they are about to enter. It makes it real for them.

Something that really motivates my students is bringing them out to the setting. In class we learn and they have hands on but on this trip they really put everything together and they have a better understanding of whats it's really going to be like.

I like the suggestion of bringing in successful graduates. I already use field trips, which tend to be memorable class experiences.

Hi Shirley,
I would bring successful graduates in and have them talk with the students. This really gets the students excited because they see these graduates as peers so they can picture themselves in the same positive career path. I use field trips as motivators as well. The key is to build a mental connection for the students between their classes and their future.
