Approaching students as a human being
We are all humans and make mistakes. We are not perfect.
Hi William,
You make a good point about getting involved and learning from the ground up how to do certain functions. The students have a safety net while they are students so they can risk take a bit and make some mistakes with minimum consequences. This way when they are in the work world their mistakes will be fewer because of the education they received while in school.

Our program is very hands-on...mistakes are not only inevitable they are probably the best way to learn...the trick is to not let the students get discouraged but to see the value in the process
Hi Christin,
You are helping your students to work through the steps of problem solving by enabling them to get to the right answer once they have experienced the homework. The key is that they acquire the knowledge to know how to problem solve because that is going to be an essential skill for their career success.

Students come to school to learn. If they knew everything, they wouldn't need to come to class. I believe and express to the students that grades on quizs and tests are a way to assess their understanding...but these are tools to best learn from and grow through.
I encourage my students by allowing them to make mistakes. I tell them not to stress about getting an answer on a homework assignment wrong. Its is more importatnt to get the answer right on the test.
