Reality Check with Students
How do you get students to truly understand the reality of the career path they have chosen? Many have a false presumption of what the industry is about.
Hello Carolyn,
You made an excellent comment in reference to the real world, I am a Cosmetology Instructor, immediately my students have the concept of prospering in their career by performing excellent designs etc. Of course this is important;I constantly remind them that being professional and remaining professional at all times in a salon setting is a significant and necessary asset to the business.

Hi Carolyn,
This "connecting the dots" between the classroom and the real world is so important. The more you can do it the more accurate the picture of what the students will see when working is going to be. This accuracy is what is going to keep them in the field.

I am an Vocational Nurse instructor, and many times during class I give the them school version and the "real world" version of what they are learning. I try to encourage them to practice what is taught in school, but I like to give them the option of knowing what is really done at work so they won't be shocked when they start working in the field.
Hi Dara,
Right you are. These two teaching strategies really get the students excited and ramped up about their field. I use them a lot in my teaching because they help to make my course content more real for students.

Guest speakers and field trips help bring a relativity to the curriculum and both also allow students to see real-life application circumstances for waht they are learning in class.
Hi Todd,
I have people from the field come in and talk with the students. I take them out on field trips to see the reality of their futures in relation to their career choice. These methods really open up their eyes to the career choice they have made.
