DEVELOPING AS AN INSTRUCTOR

BEING A NEW INSTRUCTOR, THIS OVERVIEW HAS BEEN VERY HELPFUL. BROUGHT THINGS TO LIGHT WHEN FEELING A LITTLE OVERWHELMED.

Hi Lisandra,
Good point. By expanding your expertise as an instructor you will be more effective with your students and enjoy being an instructor even more.

I like the fact that it outlines the do's and don'ts about instructional styles. It is something that we do on a daily basis but yet sometimes we are unaware of what it is we are doing wrong and why we are not accomplishing our goals.

Hi Ronald,
Welcome to teaching. I wish you much success in your efforts. I know you are going to enjoy helping others achieve their life goals. A great benefit of being a teacher is the development of rapport with students. These connections help you to see why you work as hard as you do in preparing to teach.

As a new instructor, all of the information is very useful/reassuring which makes my career more enjoyable-having a good rapport with your students is a most important concept and one could easily fall into the "PAL "category.True,a friend is not what they need to be.

Hi Tiffany,
Great story. Thanks for sharing it with us. I can tell you are a natural teacher. I wish you much success in your career as a person that impacts the lives of her students while helping them achieve their career goals.

I began teaching in June of 2007 a month after I graduated from cosmetology school so I was teaching students who were my peers in school and this was very difficult because I didn't want to hurt feelings or show favortism but it happened and realized real quick how students can turn on you when you don't let them get away with things. I am still teaching just for another school and over the few years developing as an instructor has been a lot of hard work. I know my material like the back of my hand, but it was my caring personality that in the end was holding me back and as I grew as an instructor I realized the difference and it has made me a better educator. I am not worried anymore at then end of class if they like me or not.. now my biggest concern is if they received the material. I am a natural born teacher and LOVE every minute of it...learning and teaching is the easy part..keeping my distance from people who share my passion on a personal level was the hard part. It gets easier with time and you realize you are only hurting them by being their "pal" instead of the educator. Pretty sure they are not paying all that money for a new friend!!

Hi Kim,
Good to hear about the materials. I wish you much success in your teaching career. Enjoy the opportunities you have to influence the lives of your students and you help them make steps toward their career goals.
