New Adjunct Clinical Faculty
I'm a brand new clinical instructor teaching on a medical surgical floor in a hospital! There seems to be a lot of down time on the floor. I try to come up with things to do to fill the time! But I am having a hard time doing this for 10 hours. Then afterwards, we need to have an hour of post conference. Does anyone have any ideas that are exciting and enhance learning? Thank you!
Hi Shannon,
Is it possible to break the students into learning groups where they work on group research projects and then share them with the other students? Can you create games and activities that support the content that they learned in the lecture portion of the class?
You could also have the students role play different situations in relation to how to deal with different patients.
Just some ideas for you to consider. Will be glad to talk with you more about this if you wish.

Hi Dr. Meers! The group spends 5 contact hours/week in lecture, which I'm not a part of; they spend 12 hours/week in clinical with me. This time is spent on a Medical Surgical Unit of a hospital. But there just seems to be a great deal of down time, more than I'm used to at my hospital. So I was trying to think of little activities we could do as a class to keep their minds stimulated during this down time. Thank you for your response.

Hi Shannon,
How much of the time is spent in knowledge acquisition, on floor, and studying? Based upon this information I will be glad to make some suggestions on how to fill the time in with valuable educational opportunities.
