Graping attention

I teach an Anatomy and Physiology class and I have one student that is a complainer that states she is bored with the class. I try to think of creative ways for them to learn the content, besides reading the chapters all the time. Any other suggestions?

Hi Ann,
Good way to incorporate different strategies for learning. By using the hands on approach your students are using different learning preferences which enhances the retention of content as well as making application.

I teach anatomy to veterinary technology students, so you may not want to use stuffed animals but what we've done is write anatomical terms on the board. Each students selects an animals, and using tape and a marker, labels these places on their animal.

When everyone is done, each student introduces their animal to the group and identifies each location given.

More interactive and repetitive than standard terms.

Hi Lashawnda,
Talk with the student individually and have him/her explain why they are bored. Sometimes putting it into words helps them to see the value of the course content. Then I would ask them for suggestions for how to make the content more interesting. It will be interesting to see what they come up with. You can assign them a special project if they think they are superior to the knowledge being shared.
I also would have a direct discussion about behavior and expectations because I will not let such student disrupt my classes and infringe on the learning of my other students.
