Some ways that I feel that I can model behaviors that will help my students to suceed in their career field is to be a leader, show honesty and integrity, remain professional and ethical in any given situation, at all times.
I believe that we far too often forget to highlight the importance of soft skills and give too much focus on the technical aspect. We need to set a good (an outstanding!!) example to our students.
I agree, to often today, people are ask to act or be a certain way, but then the people who are asking this of them, do the complete oppisite.
Hi Shelly,
Right you are. We have to be the examples or what we say we want the students to do is wasted since we are not modeling what we are asking.
Gary
I can be on time, professional and prepared.
I feel that you lead by example. If you are late getting to class everyday, you are not setting a good example for the studens. I also think that how you handle situations in the classroom is a very important part of being a role model. If an instructor is not professional in the classroom, students see that and begin to think that professionalism is not important. We as instructors have a huge impact on our students. We should always maintain a professional attitude and apperance, both at work and outside of work.
Hi Anthony,
Keep up the professional development you are undertaking. With these efforts you are developing essential skills that will enable you to expand your instructional expertise.

Hi Tamara,
Good way to capture and use a teachable moment. This way the message about being a professional will stick in the minds of the students.

As model behaviors, I must observe carefully at all behaviors. As an Instructor there are components to follow. Professional presentation, conduct, time, leadership, confidence, dress, and language. As I learned in my first online course in regards of becoming a better instructor.
The mention components are the basic foundation to become a " model behaviors ".
I hope that I can become one with the knowledge I have acquired today. Thank you for your help in helping us the instructors.

I need to make sure I am displaying the proper professional behaviors. When some unprofessional behaviors are displayed ask the student's how the situation could have been handled differently.
I can model behaviors for my students by arriving to class early (at least 10 minutes) and being prepared with handouts and other materials. If I'm not prepared, how can I make sure my students will be when they have to make a presentation? I try to make my classroom similar to a job site, and you would not arrive late and unprepared, so don't do it in my classroom.
Instructors can lead by example by dressing appropriately, being on time, being confident, using good grammer, use good common sense.
Patience is critical. Also, I do agree that failure also has a greater impact than we think. In conversations with my nieces and nephews, when they communicate that they have not passed a subject or that their team didn't win, my question to them is usually "Did you do your best?" If the answer is "no", then I point out why they have failed and engage at a different level. What can you do to change the outcome the next time around?
I have read many of Leo Buscaglia's writings and I agree wholeheartedly with Aimee Caughlin. I also think of Abraham Lincoln and how many times he had failed before becoming President of the United States. He is now one of the most admired Presidents in the US and abroad.
To always succeed at what you do can lead to complacency, hence putting us in the position of not always putting forth our best.
We lead by example. Arriving early, being prepared and focused are important. I believe it is also important to address students by name - this gives them the sense that they are important to the process, whatever that process may be. Quite frequently, we are not sure what is going on with someone and being addressed directly - like a smile - lifts a person's sense of self and gets them engaged at a different level.
Hi Jeanne,
You have a clear and comprehensive picture of what learning entails in relation to student success. By following the plan you have laid out I know your students are going to achieve much if they are willing to put forth the effort.

I teach in the classroom, skills lab, and take a clinical group in our session. I think the consistency of my behavior, information, dealing with student issues and concerns in all 3 areas helps me to reach my students in a very essential way. They see my follow through, consistency, and dedication in different arenas. I also helps me to see the strengths and weaknesses of my students in different arenas. Some that may stuggle with the didactics may shine in the skills lab or clinical area and vice versa. Then I can help them to see that they can succeed even though some areas are more difficult. I also find that when they see me in various roles they seem to be more receptive and inquisitive in the classroom.
Hi Tom,
Good list and one that will set an instructor up to be the type of role model that students need to be observing.
Gary
Hi Patricia,
Good strategies for showing your students what a role model in the field should be like. This is so important as they form their opinions on how they will perform once they are in the field.
Gary
Professional dress
Showing respect
Punctuality
Using proper speech: proper grammar, minimal slang, absolutely no foul language
Some of the ways that I can make sure my student see me as a role model is that I inform my students on day one how I was a student and how time plays an important role in your attitude and outlook on everything. You also have to be flexible in your classes. You may have four classes in a term and each class needs the same material but you have to teach each one differently.
