I always come to class with a positive and eager to teach/learn attitude. Even though I am the one teaching the subject, there is always something new to learn from the students or the topic being discussed. This attitude really motivates the students to have class discussions, while wanting to learn more.

By setting an example Arrive on time, Dress according to your profession, take pride in what you teach, and be positive at all times because they are watching and thinking about whether or not they want to follow your professionality.

Maintain professionality,
maintain classroom control.
be understanding but not a shoulder to cry on.
Understand who your students are and deal with them constructively.

I agree with all of this statement
hope these words of wisdom are spoken by all .

I am very big on Leading by example...the way you are pereived is half the balltle to helping them obtain success in thier field of study.

Always be a profesional in all you do. Show pride in your work and never cut corners as a means to an end. Treat all as you would like to be treated and always strive to be the best you can be.

Hi Angela,
Well said and a great point. We have to reflect what we want our students to become and that is successful in their chosen career area.

Always be in class on time and always be sure to start class on time. You want to model the behaviors that you expect your students to display. Always lead by example.

To start with, the soft skills are essential in terms of presenting yourself in a professional manner. This is followed with commitment, consistency, and fairness in dealing with all aspects of the educational process. In delivering instructions, I like the Harvard proffessor's advice on convincing your students how much you love the subject.

Students will look to us for proper behavior and manner and professional conduct.

Hi Tammy,
Good points about professionalism. Displaying professionalism helps the students to develop their own professionalism in relation to their field. The "soft skills" are as important to career success as are the specific skills and knowledge.

Humility is definetly a must in any profession. If a person feels they "know everything" they cease to have the ability to grow. All professions are evolving constantly, some faster than others, but as change occurs we need to ALWAYS be humble enough to grow with it.

It is always very important for students to see that their instructor is a professional individual with upstanding values and practices. When instructors model behaviors of professionalism (like being on time and being appropriately dressed for their particular profession) they are creating a foundation of professionalism that the student will continue to build upon. Likewise, when instructors behave in manners of good professional values (like always being honest and consistent) the students will model after what they have observed. Both of these model behaviors will greatly assist students in being successful in their career fields.

Professionalism and lead by example.

There is a long list that an go here. For starters you dress and act the part of a professional. Your communicaitons must be clear and professioinal-no profanity. You must be positive and desplay passion for the topic and profession.

I agree with you, John. I am sure that instructors can pursuade students with their expertise and careful behavior of assessing the student's capabilities to learn the knowledge.

Looking at this course with "fresh outsider eyes", I can see the importance of the qualities an instructor needs to have & display to be successful with his/her students. It should be apparent from the student's viewpoint that the instructor is both professional and caring. This should produce good results when they apply what they learn in the classroom.

Instructors can be role models because students learn mostly from their instructors. If the instructors will behave in a professional way and they will reach out to every student, students will also learn similar ways and this behviour can have positive impact on the student's behavior.

You are absolutely right about enthusiasm! That is one point that I forgot. Thank you for adding.
Vicki

Hi Vicki,
Good points. Thanks for sharing them. You have given us the foundation of instructional professionalism that is needed for teaching success. I would add enthusiasm as being another key as a role model. When students see someone that is excited about the field and is really looking forward to teaching others about it they get excited as well.
