the best way i can model behavior for my students success is literally- model the behavior that i would use in th OR. Specifically by demonstrating techniques which exemplify the Surgical Technician's role-utilizing aseptic technique which working effectively and efficiently.

Set boundries and rules within the classroom and adhere to them.

Be consistent with professionalism.

If our behaviors do not convey the importance of professionalism, work ethic, and excitement for the field, our words will not be very powerful. We need to practice what we preach or there is no credibility.

Come to class on time and set boundaries. Stay consistent.

We are role models for our students. If we want our students to be in class and ready at the time class starts - we as instructor - who are their role models - need to be in class and ready to start at the time of class

Being in music business people often times think that it is a very casual atmosphere and present themselves unprofessionally. However, by distilling in students the need for professionalism (in dress and personal presentation) the are setting themselves up for success. They will be taken seriously in the industry and be offered more opportunities. It starts with me as an instructor presenting myself professionally.

By being honest with them as to what you have seen the field require/change over the years. Making sure that you display at all times how your field expects you to behave and communicate as well as dress.

When doing demonstrations in class wipe equipment down and double check your work. Try and instill pride in your work. Make sure you double check your work and leave it cleaner than when brought in. If not it makes you and your shop look bad. If not the customer will let anyone who will listen know how he was treated.

Dress professionally

Hi Norma,
Good overview on how to present a professional image to the students and create a setting where they see a person that has had success in the field and is willing to share that with others.

I feel it is very important for instructors to show up on time. It is very disrespectful to arrive late to a class and sets a president that punctuality is not important.

My classes are mostly involved with drawing and creative aspects. I always try to present myself and my class in such a way to where it is positive and encouraging, but somewhat simulates my experiences in the professional field. A bruised ego can crush a student’s motivation, especially when it comes to personal expression and creativity that art classes are involved with. So I always try to provide professional criticism that addresses aspects that the student might need to focus on, but at the same time I try to find strengths in student’s abilities and encourage them to continue their improvement of said strengths. Both of these aspects I feel set a positive role model for a student to simulate when they are in the professional creative field.

Personal dress is a good way to model for students. Clothing should not be too tight or
skirts too short if it is a woman and shorts should not be worn by men or women. Clothing should be appropriate and clean and reflect what student are required to wear when they begin to work in their field. Behavior should also be modeled in the way to address students. The buddy system does not work. Answering questions and assisting at the students desk is a good way to install confidence and show a desire to assist them. When lecturing a teacher should repeat important sections and frequently request questions on the subject matter.

To maintain a professional image an instructor must maintain a positive image. Clothing and the personal image should be clean and neat and appropriate for the setting. An effort should be maide to maintain a smooth voice with some pronouncement where emphasis is needed. The instructor must be well informed so that questions can be answered and if something comes up that she doesn't know, not be afraid to tell the students and be able to find the answer for later lectures. Instructors should set good examples and not try to be buddies with students, but be role models.

Make sure you are understood by repeating text and asking question concening what you just said or read. Write or prong legibly so there is no misunderstanding about the lesson. A question so students will think before they answer. Write text according to rules of the school in informing students of testing and learning standards.

Hi Robert,
Right you are. We instructors have to remember this no matter what situation we are in. Our students are watching us and making decisions about our professional commitment to our field and our teaching.
Gary

In Air Force Officer Training school I was taught as a leader I live in a “fishbowl”, said another way, “You must understand you are constantly being watched” – those watching you in a leadership role will naturally assume what you expect of yourself will be accepted of them. So, if you criticize and disrespect your leadership, guess whose leadership will be criticized and disrespected next? I think the principle applies here too – followers take on the characteristics of their leaders. Integrity of character is essential.

What I like to do is, When I take my students to the lab or any other desination, explain to them that wherever we are that space should look better when we leave than it did when we arrived. The reason for this is not only to express to them expectations of their service manager but to instill a bit of pride in what they do.

You also have to have respect for yourself.
