Hi Brian,
Learners need variety to keep engaged in learning. Your offering the different forms of media really helps to keep them focused on the content.

Hi Tom,
Great way to continue your own professional development by using your connections and resources. As a result you are going to continue to expand your abilities to be a dedicated instructor.
Gary

I can improve my instructional abilities through use of multi media such as video clips, power point presentations and audio. I find students respond better to different forms of media and presentation.

Lately, since the economic downturn, we have not had much access to professional development funds. Luckily, I have built up a small network of bakers and chefs that I consult regularly to see what is happening in the industry. These industry leaders provide me with a pretty good picture of what is going on. Additionally, I read everything I can get my hands on about my chosen focus which is breadmaking. Lastly, I just practice a lot!

Hi Terry,
Way to be creative and bring instructional improvement to your classes at the same time.

Hi Tom,
What are some sources that you use to stay current with your professional development in addition to staying current with your field?
Gary

I try to observe, and listen to, my students for an opportunity to discover a new approach to presenting material. I try anything that appears applicable, and assess the outcome, and whether or not I want to add that approach to me repertoire.

I teach baking and pastry so staying current in my field is essential. I do this by reading chef's blogs and websites. There are so many ways to communicate with industry professionals today. This allows me to expand my knowledge and competency in my field.

Hi Kevin,
Even with your heavy work load you are still growing as an educator by listing the ways you are working to keep the interest of your students. Look for little ways to develop as an educator and before you know it you will have a host of new techniques you can use in your teaching.
Gary

practice make perfect. watching the audience and their response and gauging their understanding by asking directed questions can help to determine if you are getting through.
i again utilize other instructors as way to garner new ideas to make my skills more effective.

I tend to use alot of visual aids like video segments, news reports, etc. to support or to stimulate class discussion regarding the sociological concepts. I can expand my instructional abilities by bringing in guest speakers and trying a field trip or two. Its hard to find good blocks of time for preperation as I work full time and have a family - so I need additional work in this area....

Hi Liz,
First and foremost find your style and then develop it. Observe other instructors and learn all you can about instructional delivery while refining your style. You will find that you will soon get settled comfortably into your style and have a great experience with your students.
Gary

I find it helpful to get feedback from more experienced instructors. However, that can also be difficult, as some have a very different syle than I do. I try hard to incorporate different techniques into my teaching, such as lecture, demonstrations, hands-on, activities, etc. It's hard to please everybody and remain true to myself and my own style.
