Defining Instructional Professionalism

How do you define instructional professionalism?

Defining instructional professionalism means to always being professional in your teaching role. You are providing and discussing ways to be professional with your students as you are teaching. Arriving on time and being prepared for class is the first step. Knowing the informaiton you are teaching over is another way to show professionalism and always being a positive role model.

Hi Eloise,
I like your definition a lot. It makes good sense and is something we instructors need to keep in mind.
Gary

I have one "rule" -"never do anything to lesson the experience for yourself or anyone one else- including yourself"
This is how I define professionalism- all the elements that lead up to and in the delivery of a class are focused on creating the best possible learning environment- one that only improves the experience of learning. So be it prepatation- or tools for learning the focus is making the leanring experience the best one for all involved.

i would say that it is how well the instructions are lay out on the professional level

Hi Connie,
Thank you for your comments about understanding students and they understanding you. Relationships are important in the classroom so instructors need to work on developing them. Your experiences as both an instructor and student help to reinforce what you are saying to your current students.
Gary

Teacher and student relationships are vital to any classroom environment such as control of the class and not limited to the student behavior but also the teacher’s behavior. Be prepared and know how to teach the class if your usual equipment is not available. Treat your students as you would like to be treated -- I have experience with being a teacher and being a student at the same time so this gives me the viewpoint of both positions.

Hi Khalid,
Yes, students are in need of seeing examples of what a professional should be like in their field. The key professional in the classroom is the instructor and they will model how the instructor acts as they develop their own style of working with patients.
Gary

professionalism is very important specially in the medical profession. One day these students will interact with the patients so they should learn about it from the instructor, specially the language, the dress code and attitude.

Instructional professionalism involves modeling integrity, fairness, high level of subject matter knowledge, and student centered teaching methods.

optimal, I deliver to all my students, depending on their different learning style.

knowing what you are to explain before teaching.
also be able to answer questions on the subject as they arise. doing research on the subject prior to teaching

This is the ability to plan instructionally, deliver content and assess student learning.

I would define instructional professionalism as a combination of proper atire, proper conduct in the classroom, and proper delivery of the content. I think professionalism is a very important area today that needs to be taught more effectively to students. More and more "professionals" in different fields are not representing themselves in a so-called professional mannor. From poor clothing choices, to poor uses of language and slang, students are having a harder time observing what it truly means to be a professional, and that's why being professional in the classroom is so essential.

BE ON TIME FOR CLASS, KNOW THE MATERIAL, BE ABLE TO ASSIST ANY OF MY STUDENTS IF HELP IS NEEDED OR ASK FOR. I'M ALWAYS WILLING TO BE THERE FOR MY STUDENTS EVEN AFTER CLASS, AT NIGHT OR WHEN EVER THEY NEED ME.

To be organized and prepared is one of the best ways to become a good professional instructor.

To me, instructional professionalism is being able to get across what you're trying to tech in the most appropriate way. I think that you have to adapt to your audience and show them the level of professionalism that is required. Tech by example.

Instructional Professionalism is an ability to reach students in a meaningful way, developing innovative approches. It contains three essential characteristics, performence, competence and conduct.

Instructional professionalism can be defined as the ability to reach students in a meaningfull way

Instruction professionalism is the method of how an instructor delivers course material, presents their self to students inside and outside of a classroom as well as insuring that they are competent in the course material the instructor is presenting. That competence can be achieved by experience in the field, as well as staying current in industry trends.
