Students who think outside the box
I have read about the two kinds of questions, though as a student I would think outside the box and asked sometimes how this would an application would apply to the end user or to top management. Getting answers from the material incorporated into more than just the application to which taught helped me understand the material better.
Michael,
The blended approach is so critical because you have to have a foundation from which to operate before you can go beyond the box. This is a great way to prepare your students to be critical thinkers.

"Thinking outside of the Box" has led to some of the greatest discoveries in history. However, I find that in order to "think outside the box" you must first learn the perimeters of the box. Original ideas are sometimes formed by the blending of accepted practice.

Good strategy. They need to see the connection between your course and applications of the content to their future career opportunities. You are making those connections as you share information with them and illustrate relevancy to the content.

I agree as well. The course I am teaching is a basic knowledge course that is a requirement for several programs that offer certificates in other career fields. One of the things I try to do is relate the subjects to things students in other disciplines will deal with on a daily basis, as well as everyday topics to which all of the students can relate.
I agree. In order for students to accomplish or use the "outside the box" model, they need applications or examples of real experience to link the the material discussed.
