Walk the Walk

I find it VERY important to continue to work in the field as well as teach. I am better able to share experiences with the students, keep myself up to date on techniques and changes in the medical field and am able to better explain the importance of education to my students. I am more comfortable with subject material and have more confidence as an instructor. I don't just talk the talk, I walk the walk.

Shannon,
Working while teaching is making it real for the students. Adjunct instructors bring in the current day's events from the field so both application and relevancy is shared with the students. For those that have worked in the field but are not currently working in it it is critical for them to remain current so they can share relevant content each time they teach the course.

I agree as well. When you work in the field you are teaching, you are more likely to be up to date on the latest technology or literature. In addition, working while instucting allows you to offer pertinent advice and emotional support to the student(s) who fears being the newbie in thier field. Working while teaching gives you a perspective to how the student feels about performing their duties

I too agree with you Ann! I both work and teach in the medical field. I love it! It's second nature to me and very easy for me to share my knowledge with my students.

I agree with this also. I also continue to work in the field and bring real world examples to my students in the classroom. Also encourage students to attend local Association Meetings outside the classroom to start them on their way to networking.

I agree with you Ann and Roxanne. Continuing to work in the field that you are teaching does help to stay abreast of new changes and happenings. As you also said, it make teaching much easier.

Ann,
Good point. You are able to bring into the classroom experiences that have occurred recently. This keeps you current and your content relevant.
