Professionalism

Is it acceptable to have the students conduct themselves professionally as if they were on a job?

Grace,
As we know more jobs are lost due to the lack of soft skills (professionalism, attendance, etc.) than the lack of job specific skills. We need to make professional development a major part of our instructional effort to make sure our students are totally prepared to enter their career area.

Yes, I do believe it is acceptable for students to conduct themselves professionally. From the moment they step into the classroom the student should reflect behavior, as they would in a work/job setting. In this way, students will be prepared as they transition from school setting to the real world. Also, explain the importance of professionalism.

Yes, this is there practice time and critique time to make changes if needed.

Matthew,
I agree. The more we can get them prepared to move into the work world with success the greater service we will be providing them.

I feel that the student should treat the course just as if they were on the job. In the trade we teach its very important that they get that professionalism from the very beginning.

Hi Robert,

As a career college instructor for the past seven years, I place a great deal of emphasis on students conducting themselves as if they are on job. I instruct them to call or text me if they are going to be absent or running late, professional attire is expected and strictly enforced in the classroom also. Students cannot use cell phones to talk or text during class, and break schedules must be adhered to. I also do not allow students to bring in food or drinks to class, as most workplaces have designated food and break areas. I have found that the behavior I allow into the classroom translates immediately into how students conduct themselves on their externships.
