Experience helps
I have found that when I staarted teaching, that my prior profession as a consultant helped me in the classroon - All of the items mention in this module also applied to working with clients as well.
Norrisjean,
I agree and I still like to sit in on classes taught by my colleagues to see what I can learn and I have been teaching for 30 years. Learning is fun and these observations help me to continue to become a better instructor.

Experience does help!
A mentor's experience and the opportunity to audit the class of a senior faculty member, provides the touchstone for reflection and insight into the actual educator/student/learning process.

I've found students will pay close attention to a topic when you can relate a "real world" experience to the textbook definitions.
I agree that experience helps but every group is different. Just when I thought that I had seen it all, I had to adjust to a totally new group.
In turn, I found myself adjusting my teaching style.
David,
Sounds like you have had a very good professional development plan in place for yourself. This has resulted in a tremendous expertise base for you and the benefit of your students.

My experience teaching at other schools helped tremendously. My career began as a part time instructor. Each department head in each school evaluated my teaching skills and gave me valuable and useful constructive criticism that I have utilized to this day.
I used previous experience in the travel and engineering industries to show how specialized accounting can be in terminology and reporting requirements and specific issues encountered.
I also compared the specializations of cost accounting, general accounting, budgeting and statement analysis.
I also compared small and large company accounting requirements and needs.
