Denise,
Professional dress reflects the pride and dedication that a person has in his/her field. We as educators need to bring our best attitude, dress and abilities to the classroom so our students will know how to conduct themselves when they are out in the work world. They represent us through their abilities and career contributions.

Scott,
I am always amazed at how many instructors miss this point. You need to dress professionally for the career you represent. An instructor's dress reflects the pride and dedication that that individual has for his/her field. You are setting the tone for your students as a model of how one should dress in business settings. Keep up the good work in this area.

No, I beleave that we have already dressed down in the work force as it is. We have made requirements that in some places of work that weman dress like men with ties and pants. I beleave that we need to turn things around and have weman be weman and dress as such. Also I do not beleave that dressing up is a new part of denam and a shirt with button with a clean pair of tennies. Prefesional dress is always acompanied by a jacket and dress shoes.
In college, all of my business professors were required to dress in at least "business casual" attire. Other professors wore whatever they wanted. It was easy to spot the business professors anywhere on campus- they stood out, in a positive, professional way. I am now starting to teach business classes and dressing in appropriate business attire seems natural to me.
Melissa,
I agree. We need to set the standard for the field.

You should show (teach) your students what is expected in there feild.
The instructor should set the example for the students and dress appropriately. I feel that dressing down gives the students a false expectation.
I would have to say no, that is not acceptable. As a "mentor", or as possibly their first and or only role model in the field, I feel it is important for the instructor to be a reflection of what the students should be doing. Nice clothing doesn't have to be expensive.
Steven,
You ask a very important question. In my opinion the instructor should always dress to reflect the standards of the field. So they should not dress down to the students level but can dress in a professional way that does not generate a distraction.
