What if???

What does an instructor do when their personal instruction style conflicts completely with the learning style of a good portion of the students in the classroom? Is it necessary to develop multiple different styles based upon the needs of the specific set of students in the class? Also, I have seen classes where there are huge variations in the learning styles of the students;how can we reach all the students at the same time?

Aaron,
You make a great point and one we need to always keep in mind. We are being introduced into the "herd" and as a result we need to "read" the dynamics if we are going to be successful in working with the students.

I would agree that multiple teaching styles need to be incorporated for any group of students with a varied learning styles.

However another point would be in looking at group dynamics. Even as the instructor, we often fail to realize that we are in fact the new element in an already evolving group dynamic, and taking that into account in implementing our own personal teaching style can help it to be accepted by the group as a whole.

Clint,
Good question. One way to meet the different learning needs of students is to offer variety in your instructional delivery. By offering different modes of learning you will be reaching the different learning preferences of students throughout the course. This will help to keep them engaged and focused on the learning process.
