motivating learners
In all years of my teaching I tried to encourage my students even he or she had some points of weakness I tried to show them how to correctly approach the goal.
Brenda,
You are customizing and targeting your instruction as a result of the listening you are doing. This is so important and I commend you for your effort. These types of actions are what will keep the students engaged.

I have run into the same challenges in my classrooms. One of the techniques I have used to help my students is listen to what there actual interests are and then try to show them how they can follow those interests within the subject matter I am teaching. I explain that there are many paths that can be followed in each major and I try to help them find the best path for them.
Melissa,
The more variety we offer in learning the more engagement we will have by our students. You have such a strategy working for you in your classes. Keep up the good work.

Adult learners like to be actively involved in the learning process. They want a purpose and direction in regards to their studies. Simply engaging them in the teaching process can employ motivation within students. I have found that lectures are not a motivational tool. They are a necessary component in the teaching process, but I have found that the more I engage students, simply by having them come to the board and work out a problem or engaging them in group work provides a better result in their understanding than simply lecturing. This in turn motivates them to want to be involved and learn the material for knowledge and not just for testing purposes.
Mabel,
You have voiced a common concern I hear all over America as I travel to the different schools doing in-services. I think a lot of this rests with how admissions "sells" the different career areas to students. Students have to have some internal motivation to want to succeed plus have passion for the field. When they are just there to collect money, socialize and/or use of some time before they have to get a job or drift to something else it makes it very tough for instructors. When faced with this situation I work hard to engage the students and try to get them excited about my field. For some I am successful for other I am not. For those that I'm not I tell myself that I tried my professional best and that is my satisfaction at the end of the day.

How do you instill that motivation in students who are here in school "because they have to be here?" As a new instructor in a career/technology school, I am appalled by how many students are enrolled in a career pathway who claim they "hate the classes" and "they will never work in this field". Are our Admissions personnel dropping the ball when helping students apply?
The challenge for instructors then, is to help the student find an area of interest and let them know they can use that skill in many ways.
Teaching the class in a way to help keep the students enegized and excited is a good way of motivating the student.
encouraging students is very important, for them to develope learnig skills, as soon as they have a understnding, then the motivation will fall in place, what i use in my class for increasing motivation,i create with the class a cheer-on tool using my class as i asign students to do test quizes on the board, when they get the answer correct,or even if they can not get the answer correct, the class will help out the student to get the answer, and the class will cheer them on, this invovles the class and creates motivation and improves there learing abilities.this has worked for me.asking good clear questions to your quizes is a plus.by mr zach bernal
