Developing as an Instructor

I am returning to the classroom after 10 years in the clinical area. I am now focus on
developing as a competent instructor by using model, manager and motivator techniques

Christie,
You already have a head start on the development of your professional career as an educator because you know what is expected in the workplace and have been using the tools needed for effective communication. I wish you much success in this new component of your career path.

I am entering the world of education as a new instructor and found this section quite helpful. I have been working in the clinical setting for 12 years. Educating my patients is one of the most important roles I have in a clinical setting. Without realizing it I have been using the 3 M's in my practice for years. I try to model the behaviors I want my patients to adopt, I manage a heavy case load, and I find it is necessary to use motivation techniques in my practice. I am excited to learn that I can now transfer many of these skills to the classroom.

Diane,
I wish you much and continued teaching success!

I am also entering the "instructor" arena after being in the clinical setting for 25 years. In the past I have been teaching employees and building on what they already know. Now I am changing directions and learning how to teach students to give them the knowledge base. I need to develop a personal and effective instructional style, and using the 3 M model is going to be an excellant starting point. I'm really pleased to be learning about it in the first few weeks of my instructional career. Starting out the right way sure beats having to change a "bad habit" later!

Gina,
Welcome to teaching. I wish you much success in impacting the lives of your students and helping them move toward their career goals. The three M's will serve you well as you develop your teaching style and personna.

Todd,
This is a really good idea because the journal can become your own professional improvement file as you record what did and did not work over time. By reviewing each time you get ready to teach a specific course again you can see what is needed for preparation and planning.

I am a new instructor and really like the idea of the Three M's to help with my instructional style.

Keeping a journal of the successful and not so successful lectures and demonstrations so that you can review and make adjustments to your teaching.

Katania,
Welcome back. Right you are about the changes that have and are continuing to occur.

I am also returning to the class room. I will begin later this month and I am amazed how concepts have changed within the course of 2 years.

Angela,
Bring your passion to the classroom. Be organized and prepared from day one. Use examples and real world experiences as a part of your delivery so you can help your students to see the relevance and application of what you are teaching. Your expertise as an educator will expand from there through experience.

Kudos to you! After ten plus years in the clinical field, I have decided to become an instructor. I love teaching, but some days feel so overwhelmed. I want my students to not only obtain the skills they need to succeed, but be invigorated and excited about the decision to go into the medical profession such as I was. Any tips for a newbie?

Agnes,
Welcome back to teaching. I hope you are excited about having the opportunity to help educator the next generation in your field. Happy teaching with the 3 M model.
