Professionalism
How do you help your studens become better professionals?
You are their role model as an instructor; therefore, always be on time, organized, knowledgeable about subject matter and certainly dress professionally and speak with equal respect to each student.
At the beginning of the course I inform the Students my expections of professionlism. As well as I become a role model of professinalism.
At the beginning of a new class let your students know what type of professionalsim and expectations you expect them. You must be the role model for them. Bring in outside guest speakers, take them on field trips so that they can see for themselves how they should conduct themselves in the "real world". If you set the tone in the beginning they will follow your lead. Good grooming habits, be on time, be organized with your material, praise them for their efforts, encouragement is key. New students are like diamonds in the rough, we as instructors have the task of polishing that diamond and making them a professional and productive individual in the career they have chosen.
Kryste,
Model the behavior and expertise you expect from them. Bring in people from the field to explain what they are looking for in professionals. Be consistent in enforcing high standards throughout the course in addition to explaining what a professional is and they will start to develop professional behavior.
