Role Models
What are some ways to become a role model for a student that you just seem to " butt heads with"?
Kristen,
It is at this time I would inform the school administration and get their recommendations. Based upon what they say I would then inform the student that he/she has a certain period of time to correct the disruptive behavior and if not they will be removed from the class. Then remove them if behavior does not change. They cannot be allowed to disrupt the learning of others.

I agree about the statement above that IF the student choose NOT to follow the rules or expectations of the class then making time for a private discussion with the student is much needed. But what happens AFTER the discussion and the students behavior consistantly remains the same?
Tim,
First I would try to see why you are butting heads with that student. Is it because of his/her knowledge, experience or personality. Then I would make sure to always model the behavior that is needed for career success in your field. If that student chooses not to follow the rules and expectations of the class then have a private discussion with that student and see if you can agree on a strategy that will keep you all from butting heads and help the student to gain the needed knowledge from the course.
