new instructor

I am still fairly new to being an instructor and I have been doing it for about 6 months now. At first, I thought it would be easy but I soon found out that this was not the case. It was a learning experience for me as well as the students. Doing these online courses and with help from other instructors has been very helpful in developing my own teaching style and im still improving.

Charles,
I wish you much success in this new teaching format. You are working hard to acquire additional expertise and skill sets to enable you to reach your new audience more effectively. This will serve you well in the coming class sessions.

I’m new to classroom style instruction. I’m recently retired from the military and during my career I was an instructor and examiner. The difference being while in the military the majority of instruction I accomplished was more one on one or in small groups. Instructing adults in a classroom setting is new and taking the online courses will help me improve.

Rose,
Welcome to the profession of teaching. As a result of your extensive career experience you are bringing not only theory but also practice to your classroom and this is so valuable for your students. Yes, some students want the easy route but these are the same ones that are going to enter the field if they graduate and never really do anything in their careers because they do have "try". The students that do put forth the effort are the ones that bring us joy and keep us coming back to the classroom day after day.

I am a very new instructor but not new to the profession I'm teaching. I do know students are much different from the way it was when I was in school 25yrs ago. I was more disciplined and seem more serious about what I was trying to achieve. It just breaks my heart that there are some students that want a free ride, easy way out or just there for fianacial means. I have to remind myself that there are those that will appreciate what I'm doing. I so love sharing my experience by teaching.

Hi Jenny,

I've been teaching off and on over the years across different disciplines as well as different age levels. I find myself in your shoes every time I get started again; it's like dusting off the cob webs. Thankfully, it's also like riding a bike; it comes back to you after awhile and you continue building on what you've already learned. One of our lectures also states that even the most experienced instructors experience "gitters" at the beginning of each course. I think it comes with our profession, but I think it also keeps us feeling alive!

Jenny,
I wish you continued teaching success. You have a good attitude about instruction and are developing great experience that will serve you well in the years to come.
