making student feel he is improving
when talking to student tell him he the good and the bad of what he is doing
Teresa,
This is an important part of feedback when you tell them what they have done well but also point out needed areas of improvement. You can point out the improvement areas in such a way that the students are understanding and will grow as a result of your efforts. This keeps them moving forward in their career development.

I think trying to be positive with them and pointing out what they are doing well in. As far as what they need to work on, I believe its how you say it to them. you dont want to be negative but you need to convey to them to focus more on what they are struggling with. encouragement goes a long ways
It sounds like the right way: give a positive message before delivering the negative one.
Regarding the good, I show the student what he now knows how to do, as opposed to when he started the class. I would appreciate suggestions on pointing out the bad of what they are doing without being overly negative, if possible
Richard,
Yes, it is. Students need to have support and encouragement throughout the course so they will stay engaged.

Conveying what is successfull about the student work is a great way to encourage and also challenge the student.
