Professionalism
The one thing I try to stress to my students is professionalism. Being professional in the work force is very important. It helps keep the retention of your customers, staff, and outside encounters.
Luther,
Good approach to how one should strive to refine an effective communication format when working with others. A essential part of career success depends on clear and concise communication.

At this time in our society, the younger students always seek the shortcuts in how they communicate and present themselves... I always express the importance of effective communication and presentation in our business of medical massage therapy... After demonstrating examples (both positive and negative) that relate to their lives, it help drive the point home, and opens their eyes to elements of their behaviors that need to be altered in order for them to be successful in our industry.
Ndidi,
Well said. Professionalism never changes. It is what it is and we need to always practice it as well help our students to develop it.

Professionalism is the core part of our intergrity, As a nurse for many years it has been my profession to treat my patient with intergity, respect and dignity even when they ALER, ORIENTED OR EVEN CONFUSED. Professionlism ranges from the way we conduct our selves, our customers and our co-workers.
Brenda,
This can often be a challenge so we need to plan carefully in how we will provide activities and opportunities to develop professional conduct skills. Understanding that such behavior is what will help them with their career success backed with a lot of examples is one way to help them see the value of proper social and professional conduct.

Depending on a students background, sometimes it can be difficult to help them understand what it means to be a professional. I find that some students think they have to give up their freedoms and culture to meet the standard for professionalism.
Ana-Maria,
Right you are plus it is practice for them as they will have to be professional once they graduate or they won't be employed long.

Alicia,
This is an essential part of being successful in one's career. If we do not have the professional conduct and social interaction needed in the workplace our skills won't be of much use. Good point, thank you for making it.

Acting professional as a student in a clinical setting is a must. Not only does the student represent the school through his presence and behavior, but also is a indicator of his/her knowledge and of potential employment at that site.
