Language

Teachers should always maintain appropriate english language and if slang is used, it should be used to connect the student to the professional term

Nila,
Yes, it should. So strive to establish yourself as the learning leader and keep the professional distance that you have started to maintain. It won't take long before your students will see you in this role and you can really focus on sharing your knowledge and expertise with them.

Language is something I have trouble with because I am a young professor, many of my students speak to me like they would to a friend/classmate. I try to keep it professional, but easy to understand so they can still relate to me.I don't want the fact that I'm younger than my students or the same age as them to be abused. At the end of the day I am still the professor and they are the student, my role should demand some respect. Right?

Christopher,
Your course sounds so interesting to me as you are teaching content that requires a level of engagement and creativity not seen in some of the more technical based courses. I think it would be fun to attend some of your classes and see how your students deal with these different challenges.

Use of language in creative writing is a challenge. In script writing the biggest issue for my students is differentiating between a characters voice and ethnic language. Often times students find themselves limited by ethnic use of words and struggle to think in terms of how a character may or may not speak. In lectures on dialog I will use a wide range of dialog examples to illustrate the difference between the student's voice and a characters voice.

David,
This is an important strategy to follow so you can keep your students engaged and focused on what you are teaching.

In my classroom I use appropriate lenguage but easy to understand.

Antwan,
Right you are because you are the model for the students to follow and if you use inappropriate language then the students will make that language a part of who they are as professionals in your field.
