Developing as an Instructor

Being prepared for lessons, taking the necessary continuing education classes as often as they're offered.

Michael,
All great ways to expand your expertise as an educator. We need to always be on the search for ways we can improve our instruction and be more effective as teachers. Like your method.

Hi Gary,

Professional development is an important part of keeping current with material as well as exploring new possibilities to bring to the classroom. I personally like to vary the types of professional development that I pursue and their forms of delivery. Ultimately, I look for development that allows for the exchange of ideas, like this forum.

Lori,
One of the best professional development components is as you mention experience. You are learning what works and what doesn't while growing in your experience and expertise. Keep growing and each time you teach one of your courses your effectiveness will increase.

I also think that developing as an instructor is an ongoing process. I have now taught few classes for the second or third time . I find that the "power Point" format does not work well. I have added additional materials each time. I now stop every 20 mins and have an " activity break". We fill out worksheets I have made to go with the course.

Hello, Ms. Felicia
I am a beginning instructor and it is different from being out in the field as a Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist but I am up for the challenge. how do I find these workshops and or classes so I can sign up?

Felicia,
Professional development is ongoing throughout an educator's career. You have listed some good ways to move both knowledge and expertise forward as an instructor.
