Balancing Act Educating a Diverse Population

The challenge I find in teaching in a career college is the very diverse levels of competencies that the students have. How does one find the happy medium when teaching a highly educated college graduates / professionals at the same time as those that need more than a little additional help. I find myself having to encourage the students that find the material too easy just as much as those who struggle. What are some strategies others have used to bridge this gap?

Michelle,
In situations like this I use a lot of case studies where I have the students working in learning groups. This enables me to mix the students and I get to use the experience and expertise of everyone in the learning effort. Some classes do not lend themselves to such a format and for them I try to use special projects that the more advanced students can work on while I work to bring the less experienced students up to level. It is not an easy task as you know and it is one that requires creativity to see what will work for diverse class groups.
