What does it mean to profess?

What doest it mean to you to be a professor? Is it to you a dress code showing up on time and be "classic" professor. Or is it your ultimate goal is to teach deliver the knowledge?

Joseph,
Like what you are saying because many students can't seem to make the transition from secondary school to college in terms of assuming responsibility for their own learning and career growth. You are their learning leader but it is their future that is stake. You are doing them a service by explaining that to them.

I tell my students I don't profess (though I do). I call myself a facilitator. I remind them that their education is their choice and under their control. They are the first person responsible for their education and must take an active role. I'm there to help them along. They are piloting the ship.

Joseph,
You have done a very good job of capturing the essence of what it means to be a professional educator. You are showing your students that you are truly a learning leader.

I feel being professor means that I have three responsibilites.
The first responsibility to my students. To be extremely knowledgeable, proficent and up-to-date in the area that I am instructing. To present the material as simply, concisely and accurtely as possible.
My second reponsibilty to my college. To know, follow and enforce all pricipales and guidelines that governs the college. Be a professional role model and to pesonify the mission and goals of my college.
My third responsibility to the employers that hires my college's graduates. The employers must know the my gradutes have the skills, knowledge and the understanding to contribute to the sucess of the organiztion from day 1.

Felix,
I think it is a blend of both. You need to present yourself as a model of what the field expects of a professional as well as being and effective and efficient communicator.
