I believe modeling a high level of integrity, through honesty, fairness, patience, compassion, teamwork, loyalty, and trust can leave a lasting impression on students far past the subject matter that I teach.
These are things they can take with them and practice at home, work, and in the classrom.
Brandon,
Good for you. Setting the stage as a professional is so important for success as an educator. Keep up the good work.
Gary
Many times in a lab situation students become frustrated, especialy during trouble shooting electrical problems. Working along side the student while demonstating patience and step by step strategies.
I couldn't agree more. I've always dressed neatly and keep a professional demeanor. Wearing the appropriate safety equipment in lab is a must.
I have noticed that the younger generation of students dosn't aways respond in the area of confidence or respect.
I have always believed dressing for success. The image of the instructor, appropriately dressed, and carrying the demeanor of a professional, gives the members of the class a feeling of confidence in the Instructor. When any lab work, or practical lessons are to performed, the Instructor will wear the appropriate safety equipment and attire, and set an excellent example for the learner.
Malcolm,
Presentation is a critical part of career success so the more exposure students get to what is appropriate the better their preparation is going to be for the work world.
Gary
I agree with setting the good example for having things done on time. I also note dress code in the class. Because employers will not tolerate being late or dressed incorrectly, I enforce it and any other student I see walking down the hall. They all look and probably say that they are glad that I'm not their teacher. But I also think that respect is earned when you follow the rules.
Natalie,
Way to go in outlining what a professional should be as he/she approaches the classroom.
Gary
Sam,
Right you are about being on time and focused on what you are delivering to your students.
Gary
As an instructor, BE ON TIME. That shows students that YOU are professional. This sets a good example for them. Also, have integrity. Return graded assignments in a timely manner. You should also use appropriate language, and try to stay on topic.
As an instructor I expect my student to conduct their self in a professional manner: speech, dress attire, class arrival time ect... On the first day the class rules are explaned in detail and I set the example by following my own rule, hince the term "lead by example".
Zekrayat,
Good plan. It demonstrates your caring and supportive attitude toward the students and their success. Keep up the good work.
Gary
Behavior models seem to be best shown during a lab learning environment. The student gets to see first hand how I respond to challenges in lab. Also gives me the abuility to demonstrate patients and strategies. This is a skill that is much needed in my chosen field.
Being prepared and following through on my assignments, class objectives, and grading. I express the importance of the students turning in their assignments on time and I do the same when grading their assignments or exams. I return them to the students in a timely manner.
I am a strong believer in talking at all times about what it means to understand the subject matter on hand, because of my experience in the real working environment.
George
Bethanne,
This is a great model to follow. It gives the students different role models to observe just as you mention. This way the students can see consistency between and among the different individuals involved in their training.
Gary
Being a clinical instructor out in the field, I am a role model "on the job site." I also have access to a multitude of "accessory" role models. I pair the students up with a preceptor daily. I try to choose only those preceptors who are excellent role models themselves. In the course of a day, students are exposed to different situations/professionals which may or may not present themselves as appropriate role models. This provides for a host of conversation pieces during postconference whereby the students and I are able to discuss why or why not that particular situation/professional demonstrated professional/appropriate choices/behavior etc. I not only have to dress/behave/demonstrate appropriately but they get to see their future peers in the same light and we can openly discuss what they observe. This provides the best medium for learning soft skills. It's one thing for them to see me as a model, but even better for them to observe future peers and openly discuss what they observed.
Hi Sherrie,
Simple to the point and right on target. This is what being a model is all about.
Gary
What I expect out of my students I need to let them expect the same from me.
as an instructor i try to coninside scenarios into the lecture. As a medical assistant instuctor and have been in the field for 7 yrs, as tell my students how i have handled things in the field that MAs should know and be prepared for
