New methods of teaching

I deeply feel that it is important as an instructor to have
More then one method in teaching. It can become a bore
For you and the students if you just stick to handouts. Maybe doing something like hands on or and activity can spice it up a little

It is great to have more than one method of teaching, particularly when dealing with students that need to be motivated.

Alison,
I think structure is very important for the sake of class organization and student comfort. Changing the routine with instructional delivery is what is meant by changing things up. For example presenting content via student presentations as opposed to a standard lecture helps to keep the students engaged.

I agree with not wanting to get stuck in a routine, but I also feel that structure is important to many students. Many students like to know what to expect when they come to class.

Glennda,
Good point about getting stuck in a routine. This is why we need to try new activities with our students to see if they will help the students to become a part of the learning process. Adjuncts have a real challenge because they roll onto campus and often never know if the technology is available or if it will work. Tough way to start a class when the projector won't work.

I agree that using different instructional methods is best for students, but it is way too easy to get stuck in a "routine" ....especially if you are an adjunct, and there are not always available resources or working technology in the room.

Adina,
Good point about the need for more than one way to deliver instruction. Having variety in delivery helps to keep the students engaged and appeals to their different learning preferences. In addition, never know when changes may occur in schedules and require a new direction for the course in order to keep it progressing.
