Power points
Have you ever heard of death by power point? LOL. Trying to really engage my students with the lecture time and would appreciate some ideas.
I agree that the use of PowerPoints are great. I like making them fun.
Bruce,
Good use of the Power Point. It is easy to load up the slides with too much information and then drone on while students are drifting away. You method keeps them engaged.

Another method that is important in creating effective power points is to minimize the text on each page, trusting yourself as the instructor to "fill in the blanks" with discussion. This encourages students to engage their minds along with yours. I use lots of cool images to capture their interest also!
Kenneth, I liked your reply, I am new at teaching and wondering how I am going to get through the class and material in a efficient way.
Kathleen,
One of the things I do instead of massive power points is break it up into small chunks. I may have a lot of material to get through but I will break up the lecture with a handout or activity maybe even a small group discussion before I go back and wrap it back up. The students seem to respond well to the break and the responses usually enrich the material I am covering.
Kathleen,
I think I have experienced it via some of the classes I have taken. The use of small groups, discussions, role playing and case studies are ways to change the flow of the class and keep the interest of the students. In addition, I use student demonstrations, presentations and guest speakers to keep the interest level high.
