Helping a student give more when giving all they can but not enough

How do I encourage a student who is unwilling to put forth more effort.

Duane,
Good point about providing support to students no matter their age. If they want to achieve and are willing to work hard then through our support we can provide them with the resources to be successful.

Yes, I agree. We can help and motivate the adult student to be the best they can be! If a "C" is the best they have to offer I can help them achieve that "C". We can help to whatever degree they need to be the best student their life allows.

Jamie,
I have a private talk with the individual to see if I can find out why more effort is not being put forth and how I can assist the student. I try to get that student's buy in in terms of having success in the course. If that does not work I continue to be supportive but I let the student chose his or her own course, meaning if they pass they pass if they don't they don't. I base this upon the fact that college is not high school and that person has chosen to be in college and is preparing for his or her future. I can only do so much and the rest is up to the student.
