Students with short-term memory

I teach Math and some of my students have said "I get it when you're teaching the class, but when taking a test I'm lost or freeze up." I give alot of examples in class and homework for them to practice, but I still get these responses. How do I deal with this and change their attitude to a can-do, no-problem before taking an exam, particularly the Final?

Christian,
I think you will like the results you get from your students using this strategy.

I think utilizing practice tests is a great idea. I will be using that method to improve test scores.

Alden,
Repetition and visualization are two parts of instructional delivery that help with students retaining content for a longer period of time. You are using both and I am sure they yield good results for you.

I find that constantly going over the material, especially the information that will be on the exams is very helpful in dealing with short-term memory students. Anything visual is quite helpful as well.

Robert,
Do you do a practice test with them so they can see the construction of the test questions? Another approach might be to break the test down into sections where they complete part of the test at different times so they don't feel the "make it or fail it" pressure on a larger quiz or test. Test anxiety on math tests is very common for students so anything you can do to reduce their nerves and get them to focus on the fact they really do know how to do the problems will help.
