Staying organized

My biggest difficulty is remembering to bring everything I need to each class. With only a few minutes between classes, everything comes with me all day, which means I am preparing the night before or on the weekends. As a single mom, this continues to be my biggest challenge.

Michael,
Thank you for sharing with us this great organizational tool. This method I know will be valuable to other instructors as this gives them an idea of how to plan and deliver content with a master plan in place.

To stay organized,I have created a diary for the variety of classes that I teach. This diary is organized as a calendar which reflects my lesson plan for the class. I reflect on the activities of each class day making note of such things as; lecture topic, powerpoints and associated handouts, exams and comments for future class experience. In doing this, I am able to anticipate class needs and make improvements.

Sharon,
As an educator you need to be flexible and always always have a back up plan. It seems that no matter how you plan your first effort will either fall apart or need revision. So by being creative and having a backup plan you will have a lot more confidence in front of your students as well as have a fall back position when needed.

I agree, if I am not organized my confidence level plummets. I'm beginning to see that I need to work on being more creative so that if things begin to fall apart I can come up with alternatives and still function.

I find the best way to be prepared for class is to be as organized as I possibly can be. Organization helps me collect my thoughts prior to class beginning as well as calm my nerves (if they need calming).

Pamela,
This is a tough situation to be in with the volume of courses you teach. If you can develop a master check list for each courses hopefully you will be able to quickly run through the list and get all the items you need so you don't have to rush so much at the last minute.
