Any suggestons on retaining students?

Cynthia,
There are so many different variables to consider when it comes to student retention. Start first with your student population. Many career college students have life challenges related to their families, child care, health, finances, transportation, etc.. These variables need to be dealt with by the college administration through the Student Services Office where they can make referrals and provide the needed resources. Once these issues have been reduced or at least reduced in terms of concerns then the instructor becomes a key part of the retention process. By earning the respect of students and then developing rapport with them retention will increase. Time needs to be spent in follow up and student interaction so they know they are missed if they do not show up. Follow up phone calls, emails, texts after an absence goes a long way in helping the students know they need to be in attendance. Have the students talk with successful graduates that have similar life stories so the students can see that even with all of the challenges they are facing they can be successful if they are willing to put forth the needed effort and develop self discipline required for success.
