Professionalism

Professionalism is key the key to success in the field. I have hired staff in my field and always place as high or a higher value on the professionalism of the candidate. Knowledge is important but if an employee cannot represent the office in a manner condusive to success then their knowledge is of no help to them or their business.

Kevin,
The key is to help students to develop their professionalism in the areas that are relevant to their field. You mentioned that dress isn't so important but being on time is. So that is where you can focus your attention so the students will see what is expected of them if they hope to be successful in their field.

I strive to educate on the idea’s of Professionalism. Instructing in a field where dress is minor to timely/excellent work, professionalism can stem from the expectation and disregard for tardiness. However, you should still view lateness as a learning moment.

TERRENCE,
Getting students to listen to what you are telling them about the demands of the work place seems to be common throughout the country. I know it is in my classes. Your approach is right on because you are letting a professional in the field share the same message as you are sharing. They hear it from this person and then you reinforce it in your class. Hopefully they will start to soak it in and realize that you are trying to help them to be prepared for what they are going to face in the real world.

I conduct myself as a professional in the classroom to provide an example for my students. I speak about it quite a bit because once through our program and applying for a job the student now employee must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. This is particularly true when dealing with customers. I sometimes feel that the students don't believe what I am telling them so I show them examples from the employers who are on our professional advisory committee. One in particular shared the document that new hires must sign which outlines the expectations that are placed on them. This opens the students eyes and they realize that I am being forthright with them. I can only hope that they absorb it and use this vital information in their everyday life.

Jenna,
Thank you for these comments as this situation can be a challenge for young instructors. You are right about professionalism being the key to establishing yourself as the learning leader. This helps to set the boundaries and get the class moving forward.

I find that professionalism is also very important in the classroom, especially as a young instructor. I think it's important to find a balance between presenting myself as a professional and also as someone students can relate to, but once this balance is achieved the class becomes much more successful for both the students and myself.

Kathleen,
I am very big on professionalism as well. Professionalism and the practice and understanding of it is the basis for career success. We need to help our students develop their professionalism while they are in our courses no matter the subject matter.
