Course Objectives

Using the ABCD method (Mager Method) of writing course objectives works well when the material is mostly concrete and not abstract. How does one construct good objectives when the material is mor on the abstract, say music appreciation?

Hi June,
Thanks for this input and the suggestions. Some subjects can be a challenge to assess and the more methods we use the more accurate we can be when we grade the students.

I would think that the teacher knows the subject well enough to supply the objectives even for abstract topics. For teaching English, which many argue is abstract, we break down the objectives based upon such measurable criteria as good grammar and punctuation, competent rhetoric, grasp of the question, etc. Perhaps an art or music teacher could have students strive for awareness of techniques, artists, etc. (measurable by tests, papers, etc.)

good question as stated by someone else. I teach massage and would like to know this as well.

good question
