Using a Textbook - Instructor Selects or Be Assigned One

We will either select or be assigned a textbook for our course. Either way we must be familiar with the contents and delivery of the text in order for it to be an effective teaching tool.Unfortunately, for someone like me who teaches Anatomy and Physiology for Pre-nursing students , situations arise when books assigned to me are too complicated and difficult for my students to understand. When I start teaching the class I really have no option but to use the assigned textbook .The ideal situation therefore would be for the instructor to be the one to select the appropriate textbook with clear and simple explanations. I hope to get reactions and others to share their experiences.

I am in total agreement with you, when you say instuctors should select textbooks for the students. I am also a nursing instructor and have encountered students commenting on their text assigned to them. Comments such as; text content to difficult to understand, not enough illustrative concepts or thought questions.

Following a textbook is very important, so that students obtain concrete structure, but knowing your subjects and being able to present it with passion is crucial to their understanding and advancement.

I understand, It is very hard that everything that we have to follow the book exactly. Especially, all formulas or definitions, or like you said in A & P word by word, but somehow try to related to the real world, helping the student have an idea what we are talking about.
I am sure that you have the models when you teach A&P in Lab.

I agree, many a time I have encountered a student who needs a little extra explanation an being able to use additional resources are of great value
