Working With the Syllabi
More often than not, I am given a syllabus with which to conduct my course. The curriculum developers usually develop the syllabi as well. I always take this to be a guideline, rather than a rule. The best syllabi are developed by those who need to use it in the class room. That means teachers.
I guess we are lucky in our school because we work as a team to design our syllabi.
We make sure everyone understands what the requirements are, we have someone from managment involved then we get all the instructors who teach a particular subject matter in a room and craft the syllabus, lesson plans, exams, handouts and all the rest. Every few sessions we all regroup and take a look at what is working and what is not. If we find in midstream something is not working we make the change but whenever a change is made, everyone is informed so we are all on the same page.
I agree, We need to use the syllabus as a guide. Depending on the knowledge of a particular class, or the equipment we have to work with, it might have to change slightly.
We shouldn,t get to far off base, becaues in some cases we are required to cover specific material to keep our credidation
