Setting the tone
Along with outlining the course objectives, the instructor should set the "tone" of the course on the first day. This lets the student know your expectations, both acedemically and behaviorally.
I completely agree. There is definitely a balance between setting the tone and coming across as unapproachable.
I agree, if the students don't see you as approachable due to a more forceful "laying down of the law" it can set a bad tone.
While setting the tone is an admirable goal, I've found one can sometimes come on too strong and turn some of the students off. I try to start from a moderate position, but deal with individual problems in a more strict manner when necessary.
