New class jitters
We must realize that the student are more apperhensive then us, and that they are out of their element. It's up to us as instructors to prevoke a postive atmosphere for learning to occour,it doesn't occour by happenstance.
I appreciate that advice. Thank you.
Thanks for the advice. I'm a new instructor and still training, but soon will have the oportunity to apply what I've learned. Also, the suggestions on this forum seem to be very helpfull for those nervous 1st day jitters. Thanks again.
Can't the syllabus be a significant guide for you to accomplish this task. Or possibly reading and understanding it as a requirement before continuing?

I have been teaching now for 1 year and I still get nervous on the first day. Everyone probably does. I like to talk about myself and my experience in my field as an ice breaker and then get my students to introduce themselves with gaols and why they are here. By interacting with each other we can all get over being nervous.
who would not be jittery if its your first time to deliver your lesson plan to our student. Its human nature to be nervous. Composure under pressure is a must for an instructor, know our topic and try to inject humour to it but not to the extent of overriding your entire lesson plan. Just like nursing process ASSESS your audience if they are ready to listen to you then when you fully gain there trust of the subject matter, it will start the ball rolling. Confidence will save us instructors. Some of our students will challenge our intellectual wisdom on the subject matter.
I think as an instructor its important to make students feel comfortable. Explaining to them upfront what is expected, a realistic time frame in which to meet those expectations, and providing resources for them that will help in the first day jitters.
I just sat in on a panel interview and was reminded that people as a whole whether students or teachers , or in this case possible new employee , that when put in a room with new environment and different people , it can be a shakey and akward few moments. Its what you do after those first few moments that defines the rest of the course .I agree that it is up to us as instuctors to set the stage for the next three weeks for that positive learning environment
