first day of class

I have found that the first day of a new class sets the "tone" The introduction of the instructer and students is a valuable tool in understanding my students needs as well as his or her goals.

Being ready for the first day of class is important. I always set up the day prior so I have some time to react if I discover I don't have everything on my checklist. You cannot re-make a first impression.

Mugsy, you are correct! First impression is the key to there success!

I am also going to rely on the policies and procedures of the college to give me some leverage in the classroom. I have been encouraged to refer difficult issues to the Dean. It is advice that I plan to follow as part of my back-up plan for success in the classroom.

I probably come across pretty strong in the beginning but then I mellow out but at that point the students know how I run my class and understand when we need to do business

the first day of class is always the ice breaker for me as well as the students. they find out what i'm all about, and i find out what they want out of their career, where they are going, and a little bit about who they are.

Thanks, Joanne, you're right, introductions, as well as icebreakers, are crucial to getting things going. I have also paired students up to converse with each other for a few moments, then introduce each other.

The first day of introduction is the most important. Students are just as curious about you than you are of them. I feel that it is very important to take a few minutes at the beginning of class to introduce yourself and allow the students to introduce themeselves, just to break the ice.

First day the tone of the class is set by letting students know what you as the instructor expects and how they can meet the expections. This includes rules of the classroom, what the course covers, grading etc.

I agree, it is most important to let the students know who is teaching the class and who are the students up front. I follow that with clear expectations concerning the class at hand and what is expected of the students.

You need to set the tone for the class on the first day and put all expectations on the table so the students know what to expect.

the cleche': First impression lasts, its true! it could set the tone that in your class you command respect, and that we as teachers are confident enough to carry out the subject matter.

Yup. Students are a classic example of the "first impression" concept.
They need to know what is expected of them and what to expect from the instructor.

A strong first impression is important so that you're students will have that cofidence in you.
