first day planning?

I have learned that that first day can make you or break you in the eyes and mind of the student. If you can't be prepared that first day, how can the student feel that you are able to teach them successfully? First impressions are very important in anything you do especially in front of a room full of people that are ready to learn something from you. You don't want them to learn that you are unprepared or unorganized.

being over prepared is a godd safety net. I think the saying "prepare for the worst, but expect the best" is an approriate phrase here

Hi Ricky,
What have you found to be the most effective ways to welcome students into a new class? How do you make them feel comfortable and accepted in the class?
Gary

Hi Teresa,
A key part of class management is to project a professional image. By being prepared and ready to start the class on time with materials ready to be handed out you are being that professional. This will help greatly in generating student respect. With student respect comes dedication to learning and that is why everyone including the instructor is there in the first place. Good job.

show up early, prep classroom and welcome the students with open arms.

I agree you must be on top of your game for those new students that may enter your classroom, even though I don't want to scare them right away with looking at all the work that will be done for the module it is very important to look prepared.

i agree 100% if you do not have all of your materials needed for the first day and have to keep running out to get things, students tend to do the same.I like to get all of the needed class handouts and labs on the last friday before a new monday start.

Always show up early, lay things out to what you want to give to the students in what order. Let them know what you expect out of them and in return what they will get from you. Give them a day by day breakdown on what needs to happen. If you always give them your undivided attention and you should get the same from most of them. Especially if they respect you as an instructor and themselves as a person.

It appears that the best strategy is to be over prepared.

Hi Armando,
I commend you on your effort to meet the individual learning styles of all of your students. With careful observation and examples of their work you can get a general idea of how they prefer to take new information in.
Keep up the good work.
Gary

i also agree students will judge the instructor on their ability to present material in many different ways. For example keeping in mind of students four learning styles. i for instance am a visual learner but i have students who are not so i pay closer attention to making sure during lecture i tailor to their needs.

I also agree. I believe that 1st impressions go a long way in the minds of the students.
