Better visual aids in power point

Animated Video clips, Instructual Videos

Hi Meredith,
You can use a PP presentation anytime it fits into your instructional planning. The key is how you use the PP. I use PP to play games which offers competition and activities for students that like tactile activities. Other examples would be how you introduce slide content with sounds and fly ins. This method would be for introducing concepts essential to the course. The key is the flow of the class. Use mini-lectures and then activities that get the students involved such as learning groups or lab work.

Dr. Meers,
I understand each student has different learning styles, with that said; how often would you recommend using power point presentations?

Meredith

Hi Laurie,
I think instructors should print up their PP slides in a format where there are lines and space for students to write along side of the slides. I use this method so the students can put personal notes along side the slides without having to write down the content of each slide. This frees them up to focus on the contents of the slides rather than rushing to get the contents written down before the next slide is shown.

In a few courses that I have taken recently, the instructors did not share their PowerPoint slides and it was difficult to take notes during the lecture. It is amazing how much the handouts help each student while a lecture is being presented.

Hi Mark,
You are using the different learning preferences with your method of instruction and this is good for keeping student interest. Discussion among students helps them to see the application of what they are learning.

I like power point becouse it allows me to move forward and back in my presentation. With this I am able to emphasize certain areas and help struggling students with better understanding a concept. I also the like the animation function of power pont, this seems to help solidify how a components works, this will often times generate class discussion on a certain topic. Anytime I can engage my whole class and start active debate it seems to enhance the learning.

Hi Vincent,
This is a good way of keeping on top of the learning needs of your students. You are making changes and additions to the PowerPoints as needed to keep the learning targeted. Keep up the good work.
Gary

Power point aids are very important to my students due to the fact that most learn from this type of imput. I find that I make my own power point when i find that students are having problems with a concept i am trying to introduce

Hi Pamela,
Have you tried developing your own? They are easy to put together and as you get better with the technology you can jazz them up. They are a great tool for engaging student learners.
Gary

I love using power point, I have found in the very short time as a teacher, that the students are visual learners-not all but most. The only problem I am encountering is not enough power points to go around at my teaching facility.

Hi Annejeanette,
Great job of keeping your content interesting through the use of technology integration. With the current use of so many different forms of media available you have to work hard at keeping the interest of students. Sounds like you are doing a great job of it. Keep up the good work.
Gary

I use a variety of animated movies and sound clips from various websites to get the attention of my students. I addition, I use Keynote for Apple which allows some very cool special effects and templates depending on the subject matter in Computer Science
