planning and preparation
Talk to others in your field about new method and new ranges of the normals, concerning the sax and/or age of the patients. This even concerns the ethnic background of the patient.
I find that to be helpful and it gives me new ideas on how to teach my class as well.
When I first started teaching, I was nervous and at times thought I couldn't do it. But because I met with another instructor regularly for help and for ideas on how to approach teaching methods as well as get new ideas from her, I felt more at ease.
Other instructor's ideas are helpful, even if you do not use it, it's also gives you ideas and you can build on those ideas.
Watching other instructors is a great tool to rejuvenate you with new ideas and new energy. If I've gone a long time without watching my coworkers teach, I start to forget what its like to be in the student's shoes. But when I sit a class and watch other instructors, I get reminded of important things from the student perspective like good pacing, strong enthusiasm, allowing for plenty of participation, methods on how to teach and answer questions. Sitting other instructor's courses wasn't helpful only as a beginner, but has been a great tool throughout my teaching career.
Hi Raymond,
Good plan. If you are ready mentally and prepared for your students the day is going to go much better when things pop up that could take you out of your planned instructional pattern.
Gary
I always try to mentally and structurally prepare myself for the day in order to successfully achieve my daily objectives.
We will at times discuss this in our faculty meetings to see what other instructors are doing and how well it is working.
I have been blessed to be in the same faculty room as seasoned instructors in diverse fields of study. The networking is an invaluable tool and also aids in the creativity in delivering of lessons to students. Its a great concept!
Hi Tracey,
It is good if you can follow a "seasoned" instructor. If an instructor can't do that then they should try and talk with all the seasoned instructors they know to pick their minds about techniques that worked for them and will work in their settings as well.
Gary
I think as a new instructor, you have to follow a "seasoned" instructor. There is nothing worse than being thrown into a position--I have learned that from personal experience
Hi George,
This is a great part of a professional development plan and I commend you for using it. Observing others in action will give you many insights on what to do and what not to do as you grow in your own instructional style.
Gary
I have found sitting in on another instructors class to be a great tool. You can see different delivery methods, and different ideas for getting the material across that you had never thought of before. also you can focus on the whole class from the back and see how well the students are hooked and see different things that maybe you are doin as well that cause them to loose attention, which can help you develop into a better instructor.
Hi William,
Great suggestion for other instructors. Talk to others and try to learn as much as you can from how they conduct their classes.
Gary
If you consult with other instructors in your field this will help make your planning easier. Every instructor has a different way of preparing for a class and there might be something that another one does that you may not have thought of This could streamline the way you plan and prep for a class.
