Audience
This module discussed knowing the audience well to determine instructional objectives. I couldn't agree with this more! I often will tailor my teaching methods and activities based on the past experiences of the students taking the course that particular quarter. That way the course is personalized and fresh every time I teach it!
I use that method as well, and will often use specific examples and articles that relate to specific students work experiences throughout the course. It makes what you are teaching that much more relevant.
Hi Brian,
You method of starting a new class is a good one. Not only do you get to know your students better but they get to know each other better. I have found also that by doing this kind of ice breaker it gives the students some time to get settled into the class without any pressure or stress. By the time the ice breaker is completed the students are ready to get started with the course content.
Gary
One way to learn past experiences of students is a simple get to know you activity at the beginning of the term. This can be an effective ice-breaker and also help the instructor learn more about the background and experience of the class members.
Hi Sameuel,
As a teacher of general education course what are the greatest challenges you face with your students in getting them to see the value of your courses?
Gary
I tailor my course to address the different learning styles and interests of my students. It is a little easier for me since I teach general education courses.
Hi Amy,
You are to be commended for your efforts to customize your course to the specific needs and experiences of your current students. You are right about this method helping you to remain fresh and the content current. Keep up the good work.
