Student buy in.

I believe the syllabus should should show the "how's and why's" this class is important to me. This will get the student excited because he or she will see the benefit right away of why this class may be important. Once we have a full "buy in" on the students part it will make the class more enjoyable and easier to teach.

I like the student Buy In Theme Jason

I explain to the group in detail with an open ended discussion why the subject is,and should be important to them. Not from an intellectual level, but a $ DOLLARS CENTS,sensibility.

Why mastering the subject is going to give them a leg up on the competition in the work-place.

What the consequences of not fully understanding the subject is,and how mastering the skills and information is going to give them added value to a future employer.

Everybody can relate to a future financial reward.
Spell it out, demonstrate this on a daily basis referring back to the daily learning objectives and competencies.

You Should be able to Demonstrate
How can this make things?

Better For my employer
Higher quality
Higher value
Please the customer
Save money
Get me ahead

If you accomplish this on DAY ONE and continue

A bulk of the students will BUY IN!

I like the 'student buy-in". What I do is completely go over the syllabus the first day to ensure that the students understand the document. I may, in the future, add the student signature page claiming that is has been read and understood.

Hi Jason,
That is the key "student buy in". Once we have set the stage for that to occur then we are well on our way in terms of developing our students' knowledge and skills.
