Addendum

I use an addendum in my class becuase our text book is not the best. In the addendum. I have the items they are responsaible for and the demos I will be doing for that day. I am considering adding some more things too it to help the students.

Hi Tasha,
I agree with your assessment of getting too rigid in your planning. I give my students a calendar of dates and general topics. This lets them know what is coming. Also, on the sheet are the dates for when assignments have to be completed. By using general topics of have the freedom to work within the dates to review or cover material that wasn't understood the first time through.

Currently from experience I've found addendums to be too heavily relied upon. At the start of each quarter, I hand out the course syllabis which outlines in detail the policies, procedures, and assignment requirements. To formatively say what will take place day-by-day doesn't allow room for flexibilty. I teach Radiology and initially my students wanted an addendum; stating the importance to know "what was to come". However, it was soon discovered that "what was to come", didn't come easily and I had to go back and reveiw the course material several time until it was well understood. Not having an addendum allowed the much needed time and flexibility to present, repeat, and apply the cirriculum.

I use an addendum primarily to provide the students with an day-by-day agenda but I also use it to spell out, emphasize and detail policies and procedures like late homework and makeup tests.
